Our client is a successful charitable organisation, based in the education sector. Following a successful organisational restructure, they are now seeking a suitably qualified (ACCA/CIMA/ACA) accountant, to head-up a small finance team and become part of the leadership team.

You’ll be a hands-on accountant, able to produce accurate management reports and financial analysis, in support of the business’s strategic plans. You’ll be compiling budgets and medium-long term forecasts, and putting into place good financial processes, to enable the smooth running of the department.

Key responsibilities;

Business Planning

  • Providing financial analysis to support financial plans.
  • Implement processes and procedures to enable delivery of the strategic plan.
  • Compile annual budgets and forecasts, including preparation of annual staff costs, alongside the HR dept.
  • Continuously improve management accounting and forecasting systems, including reviewing the software used.
  • Prepare and review financial data for fund raising applications and business planning.
  • Ensure the best management of cash reserves.
  • Identify and look to reduce any financial risk to the business.

Reporting

  • Prepare the year end accounts for audit and also the completion of annual returns for the Charity Commission and Companies House, liaising with auditors, the Chief Executive and the Trustees’ Finance and Audit sub committee.
  • Prepare monthly management accounts for review with the Chief Exec’ and the senior executive team, with appropriate variance analysis and commentary.
  • Prepare and review monthly reconciliation of balance sheet accounts.
  • Prepare and produce monthly cash flow forecasts and other reports as required.
  • Maintain the fixed asset register
  • Ensure all tax returns are submitted on time.

Other duties

  • Manage and support a small finance team of 3 in their day to day activities, including carrying out annual appraisals, and set relevant objectives/KPI’s.
  • Carry out any recruitment for the team as required.
  • Administer the pension scheme.
  • Manage renewals of insurance cover and update bank changes/mandates as required.


Skills & Experience required:

  • Qualified Accountant (ACA/ACCA/CIMA), with relevant experience in a similar position.
  • Experience of working in the charity sector would be beneficial but not a definite requirement for this role.
  • Excellent analytical skills, commercially focused, with experience at a strategic level.
  • Commitment to business improvement and a preparedness to change the status quo.
  • Proficient with MS Excel to advanced level (macros/pivot tables etc).
  • People management experience
