You can choose to either show all members on the platform you are open to work, which includes branding your profile photo with the phrase ‘open to work’, or choose just to show this to recruiters. For those who are already employed, having this set to recruiters only may be a good idea if you do not want it publicly known that you are looking for new opportunities.

Optimise your headline

Your profile headline and recent job title are both weighed heavily in LinkedIn’s recruiter search algorithms. Use the 220 characters in your headline to showcase exactly what you do, your expertise, and what you are pursuing. In regard to your job title, we recommend using all the characters available to include relevant keywords to boost your chance of being discovered by recruiters.

Write a compelling summary

Your LinkedIn summary is a great place to show recruiters the ‘why’ behind your career. Use it as an opportunity to join the dots between your skills and experience with your interests, motivations, and aspirations.

Upload a high-quality, recent photo

According to LinkedIn itself, profiles that include a photo are 21 times more likely to be viewed than those without. Opt for a professional headshot of you alone. Ensure the resolution is high and the picture is cropped to the right size.

Fill out your entire profile

To make your profile rank as highly as possible, you need to include as much information as possible filled with relevant keywords. For example, adding your location boosts your chances of being found by 23% and job seekers who add their educational background receive 17 times more messages from recruiters. Don’t forget to include both your technical and soft skills, such as communication and critical thinking.

Use your connections

You can also use your connections to your advantage because your profile will rank higher with recruiters if you have more common connections. Make sure you connect with current and former colleagues on the platform to build your network. Once you are connected, you can ask people to write endorsements and recommendations for your profile that also help you rank higher in recruiters’ LinkedIn searches.

Stay active

If you want to stand out on LinkedIn, you need to make sure a recruiter is going to like what they see on your profile. Stay active by posting relevant industry articles and engaging with others in your field such as liking or commenting on their posts. You can even write and publish your own articles through LinkedIn.
